Since 1960, slippery elm has been a popular drug store staple for curing sore throats. Slippery elm can be found in a cough drop or syrup. The active ingredient is a substance called mucilage, which comes from the inner bark of the slippery elm. Mucilage swells when it comes in contact with water, thus coating the mouth and throat helping to reduce pain and inflammation. A popular brand of slippery elm cough drops is by Thayer’s and can be found in most drug and health stores.
Another herb that contains mucilage is marshmallow. This is not the white and gooey sweet you may be used to. Marshmallow is an herb, and it is recommended that marshmallow tea be used as an effective remedy one to three times daily. Diabetics should not take marshmallow as it can interfere with diabetic medication.
An age old remedy for sore throats is a homemade concoction of lemon juice, honey, cayenne, and apple cider vinegar. Simply mix one teaspoon of honey and apple cider vinegar with hot water. Add lemon juice, pinch of cayenne and then drink and enjoy.
