It starts as an itch. Then an itchy rash. When the distinctive ring appears, you know you’ve got ringworm. Here are some home remedies for ringworm.
Ringworm (Tinea) is so named because it looks and feels as though a worm has made its home in your body. But ringworm is actually a fungal infection. It thrives in warm, moist environments, and is usually passed by contact with another person or with contaminated items, like unwashed towels.
Ringworm can be stubborn, and it is highly contagious. Keep skin clean and dry. If possible, lightly cover affected area with a gauze, or clothes, so you don’t spread it. You may get bald patches if ringworm affects your scalp or beard. Wash hairbrushes, combs, etc., and allow to dry completely. Try not to scratch, but if you do, wash your hands immediately, to avoid spreading it to someone else, or to another part of your body. Wash sheets, towels, and clothes daily while you have the rash.
Camphor essential oil, diluted to less than 2% with lanolin, applied often and daily, eases the itch, suppresses the growth of the ringworm, and allows your skin to heal. It may take up to four weeks for the rash to go away. You must continue applying the camphor/lanolin ointment for several days after symptoms disappear, or the rash will return.
–Camphor oil should not be used by pregnant women, or those who suffer from seizure disorders or asthma.–
Ringworm affects all warm-blooded animals. If you notice bald patches on your pet, consult an animal expert, and avoid touching the animal. Keep pet confined to a cleanable space while it is infected with ringworm.
Ringworm responds well to home care, but scratching can lead to a secondary, bacterial infection. If you suddenly develop swelling, pus, discharge, fever, or red streaking, seek treatment for bacterial infection from your physician.
