Women hate having varicose veins or varicosities on their legs. These veins look like spider veins under the skin, which causes an unsightly appearance. Pregnant women are prone to having varicosities because of the increase in blood volume in the body. The additional pressure on the legs due to the growing fetus and uterus also cause the forming of varicose veins. Standing for long periods of time and wearing heels can aggravate varicosities. In addition, overweight and obese individuals are more likely to have varicosities due to the added pressure to the legs. Age aggravates varicosities too. Moreover, health conditions like chronic constipation, chronic cough and urinary retention can aggravate varicosities as well. When a person is strained for long periods of time, this increases the pressure on the leg veins.

Losing weight and reaching your ideal weight will take the strain off of the blood vessels in the legs.
Eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein and vitamin C. This helps promote collagen which is part of the vein tissue and valves. Eat plenty of vegetables, fresh fruits and whole grains.
Try not to stand in one place for too long since blood will try to stay in the lower legs. While walking, the contracting and expanding leg muscles act like a pump to keep the blood circulating.
Propping your feet up and elevating them higher than your heart is a good way to use gravity that will help the blood flow from your feet to your heart. Try this every hour for about 10 minutes.
If you sit for long periods during the day, get up now and then to stretch your legs and walk around and maybe stand on your tip toes and down on your heels in repetitions of 10 for a quick exercise.
Try wearing compression stockings that you can find at the pharmacy. Put them on in the morning before you start walking and the veins become swollen. If you try them and experience more pain, remove them right away and seek advice from health care professional.
