Conjunctivitis also known as the pink eye is an infection in the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is a transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and its covers the white section of the eyeball. When the conjunctiva is inflamed, the eye appears to be pink or reddish.

Both pink eyes are contagious and you can be infected through direct and indirect contact with a person who has it. Bacterial pink eye is more common in children.

Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when there is an allergic reaction to a certain substance. It affects both eyes. As an allergic reaction, the body produces immunoglobulin, an antibody that will trigger mast cells in the mucous lining of the eyes to help in releasing inflammatory substances like histamines. As the body releases these inflammatory substances, allergic conjunctivitis happens. Symptoms include tearing, itching, sneezing and watery nasal discharge.

Conjunctivitis Due To Irritation
Pink eye occurrence can be caused by a foreign object is in the eye or irritation through a chemical splash like perfume or hair spray. The best way to treat the eye is flush the chemical away and clean the eye to avoid redness and irritation. Symptoms may include watery eyes and mucus discharge but this type of pink eye can be gone in a day or two.
