The Foods To Eat If You Have Asthma

Aside from inhalers, there is another way to help reduce asthma attacks and it is through eating healthy. When you eat a healthy diet, the lungs are healthy, too. Healthy lungs will allow you to breathe easily and will remove irritants that you inhale.

Anti-oxidant Foods

In reducing symptoms of asthma, you can always rely on fruits and vegetables because of their anti-oxidant properties. Fruits and vegetables contain different vitamins, which will help minimize the inflammation of the lungs that is caused by free radicals. Eat berries, citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, broccoli, cantaloupe, bell peppers, tomatoes and carrots.

Fat Fish

Omega-3 fatty acids are reported to help reduce inflammation of the lungs and reduce the symptoms of asthma among children and adults. You can get omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fishes like sardines, tuna, salmon, mackerel and halibut. Do away with high-fat meats and replace them with grilled or baked fatty fish instead.


 A healthy heart helps in reducing the symptoms of asthma. Nuts are sources of unsaturated fats and heart healthy nutrients to boost the immune system. Nuts also have vitamin E, which is anti-oxidant. Inflammation of the lungs is often caused by free radicals that you inhale from the polluted air. Nuts are high in vitamin E so you can expect it to get rid of the free radicals in the body. Eat nuts like hazel nut, walnut and almonds. Eating flaxseed and sunflower seed will be beneficial, too. If you find it boring to snack on nuts, you can use it as topping on your cereal, ice cream or yogurt.

For asthmatics, medication is not the only way. You can fight asthma the natural way through knowing the right foods to eat.

  • Make a tea using a cup of boiling water and 4 cloves of garlic and/or a piece of ginger root the size of the palm of your hand. Steep for about four minutes, cool and drink in the morning and afternoon.
  •  Use a facial sauna or create one by pouring about a gallon of hot water in a bowl, place a towel over your head and hold your face over the steaming bowl at a comfortable distance. Breathe the steam in as much as you can stand. You can also add Eucalyptus oil to the water, about two or three drops.
  • Drink a hot cup of tea or coffee without cream to help relieve asthma symptoms coming on.
  • Drink 2 glasses of lime water a day.
  •  Have a friend or relative give you a back massage. This type of massage for asthma should be done with more force than a normal back rub for better effect.
  •  Use stick-on filters for heat oulets in the house or make one from fine cheesecloth. Helps filter out pollen and animal dander.
  •  Use about a dozen drops of peppermint extract or oil in a quart of drinking water in a glass or enamel pot, boil and then lower to a simmer. After about an hour the water should be evaporated and this will fill the air creating a homemade vaporizer.

Think about a vegan diet since many food allergens are caused by animal products.
